We met deep in the Exchange at their downtown studio. Despite being new tenants, there is a sense of familiarity about the space for the band, not least of all because they share the building with typographic artist Joseph Pilapil (who designs THU’s album art). Surrounded by beer, art, and music production apparatus, the group introduced themselves and we delved into the background of the quartet behind Winnipeg’s smooth, live instrument rap act: The Happy Unfortunate.

Part 1 features how founding members Malcolm-Jay and Envoy (Daniel Caneda) got together and connected with Earl (Beatmaker Steve), Matt and their DJ (who is now in Toronto) George. Also included is a retelling of the craziness of their Purple Room & Icelandic Fest shows

Part 2 explores The Happy Unfortunate's newest album, Cosmos, and involves a deep discussion about the serious issues like boxers vs. briefs, favourite words, and Matt’s poutine purism.

Due to audio quality we recommend listening on high volume.
