By: The Enemy Staff (latter message via Super Duty Tough Work)
The following message was beamed down to The Enemy directly from the benevolent overlord of the musical collective you may or may not know as Super Duty Tough Work. This mysterious celestial force visits Winnipeg once every few months (between bouts of interplanetary crate digging and hanging out with Sun Ra's Arkestra) to play thunderous, head-knocking shows either by themselves or as a jazz accompaniment to Winnipeg's best rappers and singers. In their human forms, you may know SDTW to do their own renditions of hip-hop standards, mixing in original verses and freestyles of the instrumental and vocal variety. For example:
August 5th is looking to be another momentous night of live music, with features from 3PEAT and Shades, and hopefully some other special guests. The former group is the one of the best musical triumvirates in Central Canada, and the latter is a rap group that was playing shows when all of The Enemy's staff were in diapers. According to social media rumours, this may also be the last time you'll be able to see SDTW in their current, human form. This intrepid publication has heard tales that the group looks to set their sights towards the heavens in a more permanent fashion, venturing out into the multiverse to spread the gospel of universal love via rare melodies and rap music. Without further ado, in its unedited form, a message from Super Duty Tough Work:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
SDTW HOSTS GIANT STEPS: A LIVE MIXTAPE CELEBRATION
Giant Steps: A Live Mixtape Celebration will see Super Duty Tough Work bring together the finest in Canadian hip hop talent for an evening of non-stop live music and party rockin’, including a rare performance by local veterans Shades, along with next generation MCs 3PEAT, all backed by the Super Duty Tough Work band.
Shades are true originators. Winnipeg’s own rap group Shades (fka Different Shades of Black), which consists of Biggs, Badd Mannaz and Len Bowen (years active 1995-2006), is a solid foundation of born emcees that grew up together during hip hop’s most respected period. After their first release in 1995 on prairie rap pillar Peanuts & Corn Records, the group released their second offering Comprehension (2000) independently, followed up by Thee Impossible (2003) and Every Dollar Counts (2006), both of which were released on Slo Coach/Urbnet Records, the latter earning them a Western Canadian Music Award nomination. This event marks a very rare appearance by these true pioneers. Backed by the Super Duty Tough Work band, Shades reunites to revisit some of the classic material that earned them a name in the game, and etched their place in Canadian hip hop history.
3PEAT's Steve, Rapheyel and Dill The Giant form a triangle offence of rap styles and influences. Their high energy set features sample driven beats with an updated sound. 3PEAT’s love of music has seen them play in a wide variety of settings, from opening for touring rap acts to performing at hardcore shows, as well a few appearances with live bands thrown in there along the way.
Since forming in late 2014, Super Duty Tough Work has quickly established itself as the region’s premier live hip hop outfit. Fronted by Brendan Grey (Giant #3 of Sleeping Giants) and backed by some highly skilled local and international musicians, SDTW is an eight-piece powerhouse. The group sees itself rooted in the traditions of hip hop’s golden era, yet still fresh, remaining informed by today’s sounds. Grey’s lyrics are that of a well-schooled writer. His witty, informed, rhythmic “get loose style” sees him comfortable either rocking the party or dropping jewels, perfectly balancing out the oral portion of the group.
Giant Steps: Live Mixtape Celebration begins at 10 PM on Friday August 5, 2016 at the Good Will Social Club at 625 Portage Ave.
