TAMIR RICE MATTERS

By: The Enemy Staff

A bright face, obsidian eyes, and a shining soul.
Curled afro-hair, wide nostrils, and a dark complexion belie his false threat.
American by birth, African by birthright, black by all; a pre-pubescent child above all else.
And a shining soul.
Emotive, vivid, recognized by his potential as all children are.
And a shining soul.
What a tempest it was, the perfect storm of hate, fear, and incompetence that took his life away. A young body now cold, a face lifeless, a human’s full potential extinguished by forces sworn to protect it.

A FAMILY ROBBED AND DISTRAUGHT
A NEIGHBOURHOOD IN ARMS
REPORTERS TO THE SCENE
THE PANGS OF 500 YEARS OF OPPRESSION STAB AGAIN AT THE COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE MELANIN-MARKED MEN AND WOMEN OF THE AFRICAN DIASPORA
PALE ONLOOKERS SEE RIOTOUS NEGROES EMBLAZONED ON THEIR TV SCREENS
A FRACTURED SOCIETY BENDS YET AGAIN

It bends but doesn’t break.
And this is the narrative again and again.
It’s valid to take life if it’s the life of a *thug*
Any protest to the gunning down of a child is dismissed as primitive *rioting*
Porky the Police Chief covers for the killer, lamenting the tragedy of death
The impenetrable blue line of the U.S.A.’s police unions shield any calls for reform
The prison industrial complex stops for no dead nigger
The blameless, nameless forces of structural unaccountability moves on
A 12 year old is murdered and the world turns, unchanged
And it won’t happen in your neighbourhood so why should you care?
It’s not on your television screen so why should you pay attention?

THE ENEMY WILL NOT FORGET TAMIR RICE
AND YOU CAN’T EITHER

HIS SOUL SHINES FOR AS LONG AS WE ALLOW IT TO
